Ever since I wrote How To Tell If You’re In Love, I’ve been meaning to figure out a follow up post for it. In this case, I’ve chosen some love poems that specifically state what it’s like being in love by trying to define the nature of romantic love. Poetry can be a particularly effective means for explaining what love is because of the way words are used.

The following three love poems are each written by women which I tend to prefer: The way a woman describes her experience of love is very visceral and nearly always engages the sense of touch in her descriptions, making the visuals of her word painting intensely vivid. It is an expression of the moment of the heart. When a man describes his love, at least in prose, it always seems somehow distant; rather like an intellectual exercise. Perhaps prose is just the way a woman thinks when it comes to love and for men it’s more about action: He does and she describes…?

So many love poems paint sumptuous pictures of affection, heavily laced with metaphor and allegory that we can easily forget the simple joys of love on earth. A touch, a simple look, the very fact of our beloved’s presence in our lives is often more than enough to stir the heart to joy and contentment.

Today is Marc’s birthday and I wanted to give him something special. Many years ago, I used to write poetry, but after a very painful loss, I no longer wrote: I didn’t have the heart to, not even for Marc, the love of my life. However, a great deal of healing has taken place for me because of this man, so I thought, “Maybe I’ll give this a try once more.”.

Did you know that there are two love poems titled “How Do I Love Thee?” You are probably familiar with Elizabeth Barrett Brownings version, but there is a second written by Wilfred Owen. It is a powerful peice of writing that speaks of the determination to love, despite the pain.
